Briyona Canty (Willingboro, NJ/Trenton Catholic) showed why she is one of the top 2011 guards in the country.
Rutgers, NJ - The last installment of our Nike Skills Academy recap comes from the Northeast version of the Academy. Here is our take on some of the players who caught our attention:
Most Skilled
Breanna Stewart - 6’4” - PF
Cicero North HS/North Syracuse, NY
Class of 2012
Stewart was the most skilled post in the building. She’s got legit height/length. The USA U16 National Team member is a very good athlete who moves well on the perimeter and also has a good release on her jumper.
If she puts it all together...
Teana Muldrow - 6’2” - PF
East Orange HS/East Orange, NJ
Class of 2013
Muldrow seemed comfortable with the perimeter drills thrown her way during the camp. She’s a good athlete who projects as a 4/3 at the next level. Just a freshman, the ceiling appears to be a ways away.
Most Upside
Sierra Calhoun - 5’11” - SG
Christ the King/Brooklyn, NY
Class of 2014
She’s a big, versatile wing - strong already as an eighth grader with size enough to bump with the upperclass wing players. She has a nice release point to her shot and will definitely be in the mix as a Top Five player in the class nationally.
Fab Five
Lindsay Allen - 5’8” - PG
St. John’s College HS/Bowie, MD
Class of 2013
Allen is a true floor general who is blessed with good vision of the entire floor. She backs that up with the skill to get the ball where it should be.
Starr Breedlove - 5’6” - PG
St. Michael Academy/Teaneck, NJ
Class of 2011
Like Allen, Breedlove controls the tempo of the game with good passing skills as well as a slick handle.
Briyona Canty - 5’9” - SG
Trenton Catholic/Willingboro, NJ
Class of 2011
Not many players in the country can get from end line to end line quicker than Canty. Thus, there aren’t many kids who can get to the rim at ease the way that she can. She’s a real athlete who is showing a smooth release on her jumper.
Syndi Epps - 5’9” - SG
Springdale HS/Cheltenham, PA
Class of 2012
A strong wing player with a good physical frame. She has a quick, explosive step off the bounce. Her release on her jumper is a bit off to the side.
Betnijah Laney - 5’11” - SF/PF
Smyrna HS/Smyrna, DE
Class of 2011
Another USA U16 team member, Laney is a real strong power type of 3/4 player. She reminds us of current Baylor forward Mariah Chandler with her ability to face up or play down low though her perimeter skill is a bit more refined at this point.
