Is your kid prepared for the next level?
« on: May 13, 2010, 02:56:44 AM »
There are several of you that post and blog on several message boards like I do. There was a topic that was out there about preparing your kids for success. After all of this, I am not sure what these parents, coaches and authority figures are teaching their kids, but besides preparing them to be a success in basketball, we need to prepare them for life skills. Parents continue to think that just because the kids reach the age of 18, they are ready to be out on their own. That’s not the truth. I can tell you that at 18 my child can’t really do a lot and it’s my fault. I can remember two years back that Shauna Truss went to cook those ramein noodles and put the noodles in a pot on the stove with no water when we were at AAU State. LOL….If the kids go to a party, then Coach Bannister is security and this is at 16u. My child has 1 room, but yet she looks like she sleeps in 4 rooms and I am the one that cleans them all up. I am not sure if doing too much for the kids hurt them in the long run. It happened to me. I am the only child and when my parents handed me over to my husband, I had a list of stuff I told him that I could not do and I told that list to him with an attitude.

Regardless of how I feel about most of you, I think the kids in Florida are being prepared well to play at the next level. I was thinking that maybe you guys could join in and help prepare these kids for life. There are several aspects of life that you can address. I know kids talk a lot about religion, values and relationships. I think it’s a good idea to talk about finances. I checked my daughter’s account again and found that she had 2 more pretzels at Disney. That is almost $12.00 in pretzels along with the other over priced meals. She had no idea that she would buy a $100.00 tire today on top of buying all that prom stuff. I had realized that I had not really talked to her about being financially responsible. All she knows is how to whip the card out. The best thing I did was to get her a summer job with the government. This is her first job. I think that she is the first Lady Ram to have a job. We had to hide this from Coach Bannister because he really does not like them working. He thinks that will take away from their schoolwork.

I bring this up here, because it was a big issue on another board. Me personally, I think that I am behind when it comes to having my kid fully prepared for being an adult. Maybe some of you may want to see how much your kid knows.
