We are pleased to announce that the Junior Orange Bowl Committee will hold the initial Junior Orange Bowl Middle School Basketball Classic on Saturday, May 8, 2010.  All games will be held at Miami Dade College, Kendall Campus Gymnasium.  The schools participating in this initial tournament for middle schools will be Norland Middle School, Hialeah Gardens Middle School, Richmond Heights Middle School and Southwood Middle School.  Each school will have their boys’ and girls’ teams participate in two games that day.  The first round of girls’ games will begin at 10:30 AM and the first round of boys’ games will begin at 12:00 PM.  In between the morning and the afternoon games, there will be a seminar presented by the coaching staff at Miami Dade College, Kendall Campus to the athletes on the importance of scholastics in athletics.  This is being made possible through the sponsorship of our event by Miami Dade College, Kendall Campus.  Tickets will be available at the tournament site.  Admission will be $3 for adults and $1 for children.  If you require further information about the event, please contact Chuck Little, Basketball Committee Chairman, Junior Orange Bowl Committee at basketball@jrorangebowl.com or at 786-546-3386.

It was a very fun day of basketball at the middle school level.

On the girls' side, in the first round, Norland beat Southwood in overtime and Hialeah Gardens beat Richmond Heights. In the final, Hialeah Gardens mighty mites beat Norland by 5 and Southwood beat Richmond Heights in the consolation game.

For the boys, Richmond Heights ran away from the field, handily beating Norland in the semis while Southwood edged Norland. In the final, it was no contest when Richmond Heights went on a big run early in the third period and then it was a lot of substitutions down the stretch as they beat Southwood by over 20 for the championship. Hialeah Gardens edged Norland to capture 3rd place in what was the most entertaining game of the day 55-53. Thanks to all of the coaches and volunteers who made this possible. Hope to do it again next year and move it up to 8 teams each.
