Student-Athlete Expectations
« on: September 14, 2010, 03:49:29 PM »

The term student/athlete should not be taken lightly. Athletes need to know that it is a privilege to participate in a sport and with that comes an added level of responsibility.  While working with student/athletes the last 10 years as both a teacher and coach I feel there are some basic guidelines that  all student/athletes should follow while in school.  Just in case you ask, I have had to perform a lot of these same tasks myself while attending West Virginia University as a student athlete in the 90’s.

The True Definition of Student Athlete

1. Don’t be on time – Be Early! ...To class, study hall, assemblies, tutoring, etc. Tardiness is disrespectful, a lack of discipline,  and a sign of immaturity.

2. Student/Athletes should maintain a high level of attendance. Rule of thumb should be no more than 1 absence per quarter. Ideally each student/athlete should aim for perfect attendance.

3. Student/Athletes should always look to sit in the first 3 rows of class. Be a leader. Show other students, peers, and the teacher that you value your education. Always complete your assignments, homework, and projects on time.

4. If you have been or are going to be absent from class email your teacher so you do not fall behind in regards to any assignments that may be due.

5. Work each semester towards your graduation, maintain a 3.0 GPA, and challenge yourself with new and rigorous courses (Honors, AP,etc).

6. Introduce yourself to the instructor/teacher at the beginning of the year and provide them with a copy of your game schedule during season. Communication between the teacher and student/athlete is essential.

7. Participate in school activities, clubs, volunteer to help others.

8. Show school spirit and be a role model to administration, faculty, and students.

9. Always Do The Right Thing!!!
